Marika Lahdenperä (b. 1998) lives and works in Tampere. Lahdenperä has focused on watercolour painting for five years now and has found in it more freedom to move between the work and the space, when compared to other painting techniques. For a year now, she has combined the sensitivity of watercolour painting with three-dimensional work. Lahdenperä graduated as a painter from Vapaa Taidekoulu in 2021, from the final exhibition of which her works were bought for the collection of the National Gallery. She has held exhibitions all over Finland, but also at Galleria Snow in Berlin. Lahdenperä works as a curator at Café Bar No9 and teaches the “Modern watercolour painting” course at the Tampere Artists’ Society premises.

“In the spring I feel the power of nature awakening again in my artistic work. When I see the first shoot sticking out of the ground, I’m ready for new directions in my work. New trends this spring have been clay frames and the recycling of tea bags for my works. Nature and vegetation are often the starting point of my art, although these may already be perceived as empty subjects in art. However, the empty space creates painterly freedom and awakens creative ways of using the watercolour technique as an extension of emotional expression.”
