Anna-Stiina Korhonen (b. 1980) is a painter living and working in Helsinki. Korhonen deals with autobiographical themes in her works, such as the concept of taste: the story that objects and habitus tell about us. In her work, Korhonen strives to bring universal human themes to light in a colourful and humorous way. Anna-Stiina Korhonen works with the means of painting, as a medium she primarily uses oil paint, watercolour and markers. She expands the experientiality created by the works also into the space by building installations assembled from objects. Korhonen graduated as a painter from the Vapaa Taidekoulu in 2021 and is currently completing her master’s studies in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts. From her previous education, she is a graphic designer and illustrator. She has participated in exhibitions in Finland and abroad since 2012. Korhonen’s works are in several domestic and foreign private collections, and her works have been bought at art auctions of the Finnish Art Association.

“In my most recent works, we take a bite out of taste: the story that objects and habitus tell about us. I dive into the aesthetics of my childhood home: objects that are different from each other – a green plush sofa, pastel floral curtains, a dusty chandelier and rooster whistles all spoke in a melting harmony. Magical objects fascinated me immensely as a little girl. I collected decorative shirt buttons, glittery drink sticks and saved the pink chewed HubbaBubba chewing gum – like small sculptures. The choices made in the material world are part of our personality. The tools and objects we use are extensions of our being. The object is the subject, the object has a soul. My own presence is important in the artistic process and the final result. Where and how I choose to fix my eyes play a decisive role. Shades of drama and humor cut through my story. I experience joy when the viewer experiences a connection with my works. Different feelings and temperament traits are represented in my works by means of color, shape, gestures and composition. The soft rabbit is painted in a cottony way, while the dull knife blade is painted with rough strokes.”
