“The carpet and laundry racks in the work have been part of my landscape during the remote working periods in Utö, Finland. From my window the horizon opens up to the South. In this landscape, the carpet racks form a stage-like piece. The backdrop changes as the weather front crosses the island. The steel racks and the rods hanging from them, as well as the clotheslines ripped off by the winds, rotate around each other. Over time, the structure has taken root in the soil of the island, leaning against one another.”

“Depending on the (carpet) weaver, there will be some unevenness in the edges, or even in the patterns there might a mistake. But they are left there, because human beings are not perfect. And that can be accepted. When I make my own work, I like that too, not to mind the borders. I want it to be visible that I have made each one of them. There the string pulled a little tight – oops, doesn’t matter. And there it went a bit loose – alright, that doesn’t matter either. That does not effect the image. If someone is looking at the edges, they are looking at the wrong piece.

I have had this project going on for eight years, studying what can be done with this machine, these kind of slightly thicker and rougher surfaces. Initially I was making carpets, but then when jacquard weaving came into my life, the carpets transformed into pictorial subjects.”
