Exhibition #111 – Mari Isopahkala: Aika, Time

30.10.–28.11.2026

“Time defines the universe, yet it is present in our small, fleeting moments. Time itself cannot be seen or truly felt, but it can be traced in many ways – through lived life, light, or nature. The intelligent human has learned to measure time. Today, the same species lives under the illusion that it can also control it.

The exhibition brings together the various manifestations of time in the form of moment-revealers made of glass and metal.

Depending on its physical state, glass can be fast or slow, momentary or timeless. Working with it rests on experiential learning and regionally rooted craft knowledge. A random or deliberate moment can be frozen in glass. Through the light present in a space, it can also point to the time that is now.

The metals of our Earth come from outer space. On contact with the atmosphere they begin to develop a patina by reacting with sulfur in the air. Finland’s air quality is still good, so metal oxidises relatively slowly here. The situation is quite different in polluted megacities, where time visibly races.

Carpe diem!”
