Aurea Tanttu

Aurea Tanttu is a painter currently based in Helsinki, Finland who graduated from the Fine Art Painting department at Wimbledon College of Arts (University of the Arts London) in 2019.

Her work is a self-reflective conversation that leans heavily on intuition. The debate between the habitual mundane and the pursuit of the sublime is an ongoing theme in her work and artistic research, and she’s intrigued by the subtlety of human nature, and the connection between human and animal experience, which is often the subject matter of her paintings.

The debate between the habitual mundane and the pursuit of the sublime is an ongoing theme in her work and artistic research, and she’s intrigued by the subtlety of human nature, and the connection between human and animal experience, which is often the subject matter of her paintings.

She works mainly with oil and charcoal on plywood or canvas.

“The transience of subjects, be they tied to seasons or states of being, has recently drawn my attention to my home environment and helped me discover drawing as an essential tool in my studio practice.

The studio is an intimate space that occasionally travels with me in notebooks and sketchbooks. An air of longing and yearning to resolve something from the past creates a sort of confabulation. As memories turn opaque, painting is a tool for me to dig out stories and turn them lucid, and in turn, reinvent personal myths. I find inspiration in the Finnish landscape and the feminine experiences of the wilderness.”
