“I have brought three tapestries completed last year, named with adjectives, and as an accent, a small, embroidered floral-insect-like mutation.

The tapestries are a kind of triple chord. One has led to another and then another to a third in a natural way. The beginning of everything, the sketch for “Kukikas”, is an eventful collage that I thought would be fun to weave. For the second one, “Raidallinen”, I picked the colours from the previous one and because I like stripes, I wove the stripes. For the third one, “Läpikuultava”, I wanted a print on the upper part of the work, inspired by Mark Rothko’s “Black on Grey” painting. The content of the work is on the one hand colour contrasts and differences in tone, on the other hand weight and lightness. The checkered motif on the lower part of “Läpikuultava” has also been an important idea for the sequel. “Mutaatio”, this little thumbtack is one of them because it simply fits the overall colour and is the right size for the palm of your hand.

My thinking is simple. Weaving is something else. My friend thinks that weaving tapestries is a sensual activity, and she is right. There are so many things;the threads, the colours, the shape, the surface, the structures, the shine, the handwriting… My senses are sensitive when weaving. The works are truly born on the loom and the ideas are the outlines for this.”
