Maisa Majakka

Maisa Majakka (b.1989) is a Helsinki-based visual artist and sculptor. Her figurative ceramic sculptures often depict people, especially girls and women. The works refer to the artist’s own experiences, but also real places, modern phenomena and recognizable figures of popular culture. Majakka is inspired by mundane experiences of freedom, the frantically transformative nature of life, emotional ambivalence and the female point-of-view. The narrative of her works is clear but invites interpretation. Majakka’s career in ceramics begun in 2011 with making her first small ceramic animal figurines. Ever since, they have continued to be a dear and vital part of her practice. The editions of miniature figurines such as dogs, cats and horses contribute to her work as a laboratory of trying out new materials and methods. With the animals, she mixes new bodies of clay and searches for interesting combinations in small scale, in a playful setting.
