Ilkka Kärkkäinen (b. 1960) is a printmaker and graphic designer that operates in the middle ground between art and commercial graphics. In his studio in Vallila he creates letterpress graphics using old printing presses. Kärkkäinen makes the printing plates himself either from wood, lino or in the form of polymer plates. He uses old printing equipment with wooden and metal types. Kärkkäinen’s work has a strong ecological and ethical perspective; almost everything is old and recycled, including papers and inks.

“Manifesto24 is a manifest for making things with your hands. We want to create a movement to counterbalance digitalisation. Of course, these are not mutually exclusive, but we want to bring forward the analogue interpretation, i.e. making things by hand.”

“Initially, we started looking at it partly through the medium, that is the printing presses being old proof presses or poster printing presses. Manifesting relates a lot to declaring – so somehow it seemed like the right direction. Since those declarations have been made with these tools, we will continue that history of manifestation and doing it in this time and in our way.”
