White Wall | Marika Kecskeméti: Buildings Speak to Me 29.10.–16.11.2024
Photographer Marika Kecskeméti (b. 1966) approaches the city like a treasure trove of stories. The apartment building is a book and the city is a library. Kecskeméti’s pictures tell about the cities, and its time levels and layers. They speak of past worlds, give the feeling that buildings are living and thinking beings, that they have a memory. The facade is visible to everyone, but the curious will find courtyards, gates, stairways and common balconies behind it. The border between public and private, visible and invisible. Every surface is a manifestation of the layers of time, wear and tear and life.
The pictures from Helsinki, Budapest and Athens in the Buildings Speak to Me exhibition tell about details and views that are both messages from the past and utopias from the future. As a photographer, Kecskeméti is an urban explorer who takes comfort in the fact that countless people have been there before her.
