White Wall | Akiko Mori: Geometric Spaces 16.7.–3.8.2024
In these sculptures, Akiko Mori expresses the volume of a shape. The grid allows the viewer to see the whole shape by looking through it and fully experiencing it in three dimensions. The works strip down the clay to its bare essentials to be as minimal as possible. By reducing the amount of material things, the existence of space becomes larger, and even the existence of shadows begins to take on greater meaning.
The series in question looks at the outline of structures.; the strong colours, sharp lines and clearly divided spaces emphasise the shapes as well as the spaces between the sculptures. The title of each work is the cubic centimeter volume of the space it encloses.
Physics and mathematics are the guide post by which Akiko expresses her art to find unintended results, and so discover the unexpected. She is interested in how physical properties, such as clay density and water content, affect the fluidity of the clay. Mori tries to let the properties express themselves naturally without trying to suppress them, letting physical and chemical effects take their course.
