Exhibition #79 – THAW

11.2.–2.4.2022

Lokal Gallery
Annankatu 9, Helsinki

THAW can mean all of the following things; to go from a frozen to a liquid state, to become free of the effect of cold as a result of exposure to warmth, to be warm enough to melt ice and snow, to abandon aloofness, reserve, or hostility, or to become mobile, active, or susceptible to change. It’s also a form of renewal and growth for something new. We embrace all of this with our first exhibition of the already approaching spring. This is celebrated with diverse and exquisite works by nine artists, who each have interpreted the theme in their own respective mediums.

Exhibition #105 – Matias Karsikas & Armi Teva / Loves Me, Loves Me not

18.10.–16.11.2025
In Karsikas’ sculptures, ceramics, glass and wood refer to the forms and organic rhythms of nature, while Teva’s works depict people balancing between the mystical and the everyday. The rebellion of Romanticism against the worship of reason was reflected in sentimentality, nature photography and a longing for the past. In this exhibition, it is expressed in slow working, an appreciation of craftsmanship and allowing materials to be imperfect and unpredictable.

SOMMARSTILLEBEN

15.6.–24.8.2025
This summer, Lokal makes an all-summer-long expedition to Billnäs, an old ironworks village to the West of Helsinki. Bringing beauty in the form of artwork, crafts and handmade homeware into a space which still starkly echoes its unique history, the Sommarstilleben exhibition is a celebration of Lokal’s core values. The still lifes are an ode to the magical, fleeting nature of the Nordic summer.

Exhibition #103 – Linda Linko & Milla Vaahtera / Serifs and Jellybeans

4.4.–24.5.2025
The works in Linda Linko’s and Milla Vaahtera’s exhibition form a common perspective on making art – through joy and a deep exploration of forms. Their work is united by a striving for optimism, without forgetting sensitivity. Both also perceive colours and shapes in the same way as typography. “We see the foot, the ends, the curve, the gravity and the relations – the positive and negative space. Eventually, the boundaries between typography, landscape painting, portraiture and glass sculpture fade awaym, as long as you look closely enough.”
