Lumi Tuomi (b.1997) is a Finnish-Karelian artist who works with photography, textile and hair-based works, and is inspired by the crossing of handcraft and contemporary art. At the heart of their artistic practice is unveiling unseen and hidden narratives, through which they examine Karelian culture, the relationship between hair and gender, and garden as a living archive of cultural heritage. They graduated from the photography department of Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in 2021 and is currently finishing their photography master’s degree in Aalto University. Tuomi’s works are in the collections of the Finnish State Commission and the Finnish Museum of Photography.

“I’m drawn to investigate the garden of my Karelian grandmother as a refuge and reconstruct of the gardens and plant heritage left behind in Karelian Isthmus. In my practice, garden becomes a place where materials for handcrafts and landscapes for photographs can be grown and tended to in harmony. The meeting of two photographs symbolises the tangled fates of humans and plants, highlighting heirloom plants and traditional craft techniques as simultaneously vulnerable and living cultural heritage.”
