Antti Tanttu (b. 1963) is a tradition-conscious innovator of woodcut art. In his works, he combines traditional woodcuts printed on thin Japanese paper with various other techniques. Tanttu was born in Malaga, Spain, but lives in Espoo and works in Helsinki. Tanttu’s works can be found in collections of numerous cities and foundations as well as in the State Art Museum. He is a longterm teacher of printmaking at the Aalto University and the Academy of Fine Arts.

“This piece differs somewhat from my previous works. In terms of scale – this piece is clearly smaller than what I usually make. Due to the dimensions of the printing press, I’ve had to think a lot about how to carry out the work. Also, the printing technique itself differs from my way of working, as I usually do the proofing through rubbing by hand. This process is clearly faster. As for the picture itself, it features a character who has been present in my previous works. It’s called the air scientist and it’s a somewhat mythical character.”
