Exhibition #52 – Blue Things

Matti Pikkujämsä & Jenni Rope

14.6.–19.8.2018

Jenni and Matti became friends when they were studying at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki in 1999. Blue Things is their first joint exhibition, and it is inspired by a shared interest in exploring the interface between arts and crafts, and experimenting with new materials. The themes of the exhibition are friendship, the colour blue and the modulating form of the square. Through experimenting with new techniques, they have found new ways to explore their own work in learning from each other. Placing two artistic approaches side by side has opened new perspectives into their practice.

Unique paintings and originals, as well as special designs for small Finnish manufacturers, are displayed at the exhibition. Mum’s, Lapuan Kankurit and Sarita Ceramics were selected to be the cooperative partners. The exhibition will be set up in Lokal now, and from there it will continue to the CASE Gallery in Tokyo in October 2018.

The exhibition is made possible with support from Arts Promotion Centre Finland

Exhibition #106 – Matcha

7.1.–15.2.2026
The front space of Lokal Gallery will temporarily take the form of a teahouse, where, alongside Rutsuko Sakata’s and Kari Virtanen’s tearoom installation, meditative works by artists and makers from Fiskars will be on display.

Exhibition #105 – Matias Karsikas & Armi Teva / Loves Me, Loves Me not

18.10.–16.11.2025
In Karsikas’ sculptures, ceramics, glass and wood refer to the forms and organic rhythms of nature, while Teva’s works depict people balancing between the mystical and the everyday. The rebellion of Romanticism against the worship of reason was reflected in sentimentality, nature photography and a longing for the past. In this exhibition, it is expressed in slow working, an appreciation of craftsmanship and allowing materials to be imperfect and unpredictable.
