Leena Kouhia

Leena Kouhia is a Finnish ceramic artist whose broad experience includes working as a visual designer in the media and film industries. Kouhia is an open-minded designer and artist known for walking her own path. She boldly works clay into ceramic art and functional objects. Her Raaka Rå tableware collection from 2014, one of her most famous works, has a primitive, organic, even rough design language that has attracted attention in Finland and internationally. Kouhia makes each piece of her distinctive tableware individually. This means every object has its unique traits: the details of the glazing, the weight and the feel are different every time.

Kouhia’s work 100 seinäruusua (“100 wallflowers”), which is part of the collections of the Finnish State Art Commission, is permanently exhibited at the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. Kouhia has designed products for Lokal Helsinki, A.S. Helsingö and Gauhar. A full-time ceramicist, she holds a Master’s degree and a vocational qualification in ceramic artisanry.

“The design language of Raaka Rå was originally inspired by primitive ceramics, and I created my very first rough pieces of tableware as a hobby. When I shared photos of these in my social media, people asked me to make tableware for them, too. I soon found myself in a new profession. I was a busy ceramic artist with my own workshop and brand.”
