Alex Kaiku

Alex Kaiku’s reliefs consists of numerous unique handcrafted tiles. He uses repetition and scale with textures, colours and fractured forms to compose reminiscent of landscapes calling for contemplation. Tiles breaking during the making process are not discarded as waste but rather treated as serendipitous treasures, integral motifs, and reminders for compassion. Through his work, Alex explores creating metaphors for sensing the world through connections and relationships. Alex has been working in the context of strategic design since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2018. Currently, he is studying at the Aalto University and exploring materiality while developing his artistic practice.

“I’d like to position my work to the intersection of art and design. I think of my artworks as a tool and an aesthetic expression that helps us to reflect on ourselves in relation to others, our planet, and the entirety.”
